FACT SHEET
Perianal Abscess
What is a perianal abscess?
A perianal abscess can develop where infection or gland blockage causes pus to collect, which in turn creates a small pus-filled cavity near the anus.
What are the symptoms of a perianal abscess?

Although a perianal abscess can cause several symptoms, the most common symptom is a lump forming near the anus, generally accompanied with acute pain in the area. There may also be pus discharge from the area and in some cases pain when having a bowel movement. It is not unusual for a perianal abscess to cause constipation and even a fever or a general sense of being unwell.

Anal Fissure
What is an anal fissure?
An anal fissure is where the anal lining tears. This can be caused by a change in the texture of the faeces - either a hardening of the faeces (is constipated) or the opposite, where someone has very loose stools for an extended period.
What are the symptoms of an anal fissure?

The main symptoms are:

  • Severe pain when having a bowel motion.
  • Bleeding from the anus.
  • Sometimes a swelling in the skin on the outside of the anus – a ‘skin tag’ forms if an anal fissure is present.
Colorectal (Bowel) Cancer
What is colorectal cancer?
Five percent of Australians are affected by colorectal cancer (also referred to simply as 'bowel cancer') at some stage in their life. Colorectal cancer is unregulated growth in the colon or rectum usually originating from a benign growth (or polyp) in the bowel.
Diverticular Disease
What is diverticular disease?
'Diverticular disease' describes a condition that is in fact quite common, but that in many cases causes no ill effects. It describes the development of indentations, sometimes referred to as 'pouches' in the bowel lining, which 'stick out' into the outer muscle wall of the bowel. The word 'diverticulum' literally means 'pouch' in Latin. Although diverticular disease can affect any section of the colon, it is particularly common in the sigmoid colon. It is also more common in older people than younger people. Where it is not causing any symptoms, treatment is unnecessary - it is only where it is causing symptoms that treatment is needed.
Fistula
What is a fistula?
Sometimes an abnormal 'tunnel' or connection forms in the body between two parts that are not normally joined. When this occurs, it is referred to in medical terminology as a 'fistula'. With an anal fistula, the connection is between the lining of the anus and the external skin.
Pilonidal Sinus
What is a pilonidal sinus?
The word 'pilonidal' is a combination of the Latin words for 'hair' (pilus) and 'nest' (nidus). A pilonidal sinus is a cavity just under the skin that forms near or on the upper crease of the buttocks - centrally on the lower back just where the buttocks start to form a 'cleft'.
